BAPS Care International’s 9th Annual Walk-a-thon a Success

Chino Hills, CA- The serene atmosphere of Chino Hills High School welcomed BAPS Care International for its 9th annual walk-a-thon early morning on October 7th, 2006. The site was filled with activity, as participants prepared themselves for the 5-mile walk. The track field was lively with local high school students and residents from the surrounding communities. This event was significantly unique as the American Cancer Society joined together with BAPS Care as beneficiaries in this humanitarian cause.

BAPS Care International organizes a walk-a-thon every year across North America to give an opportunity to each and every individual to take the first step to sincerely serve the world by caring for individuals, families, and communities. Each walk-a-thon participant strives to build a better world for thousands by raising funds that translate into many community services.  These activities are a reflection of how each walk-a-thon participant can change the world for the better – one step at a time. Derived from this principle, the theme for this year’s walk-a-thon was “Building a Better Community…One Step at a Time.”

The track field was blanketed with eager individuals from various organizations within the local community as they gathered in unison to walk for this altruistic cause. A portion of the proceeds from this event were donated to the American Cancer Society whose primary mission is to support patient care and cancer research services.  Cindy Chang-Salkin, ACS Director for Distinguished Giving said, “We are honored that BAPS chose us as a beneficiary and look forward to future collaborations with BAPS Care International.”

“This organization is a testament to community service,” said Ed Graham, Mayor of Chino Hills, in his address to the participants of this event.

Various youth volunteers were found on the site setting up for the event early in the morning. Kyle Collins, Fire Captain of ME 62 said, “It’s amazing to see a huge turnout on a Saturday morning. We found this event very organized.”

The walk-a-thon also featured various games and activities. Food was also provided at the event. Exhibitions featuring various activities conducted by BAPS Care International and the American Cancer Society were displayed. These exhibitions provided thorough information about both organizations and their respective profiles and services. Together, these additional elements added to the distinctiveness of the event. The residents of the community were encouraged to participate in various outdoor activities, which included community challenges and other games.

Ultimately, it was the participation of such amiable citizens within the community that made this event a success. These activities brought unity amongst the diverse citizens of Chino Hills and the participating organizations.  “This is a unique experience because it allows us to become acquainted with individuals and different organizations outside of our community,” said Kelsey Bermudez, Vice President of the Key Club at Bonita High School.

A highlight of this event along with the activities was the youth force of volunteers who were very dedicated towards participating in this event. Krupali Patel, a 12 year old elementary student in Chino Hills, described her enthusiasm, “It feels good to help BAPS Care International and the American Cancer Society…it was a fun experience to get together with my friends and raise donations.”
